The Hartebeestfontein Fire Protection Association, is registered by the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry in terms of the Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998). Registration Number 1556/01 dated 19 November 2007. The area to be controlled includes all properties within the boundaries of Hartebeestfontein 472 JQ, Hartebeestfontein 473 JQ, Fouriesrus 474 JQ, Quinlands 585 JQ and Rustig 916 JQ.   This area covers approximately 7 500 hectares. Members of the Hartebeestfontein Conservancy have co-operated since 2002 but it was decided that all or more landowners in the area should be involved as not all landowners were members of the Conservancy.

Current veld fire management

​

The main elements of veld fire management in the area are:

​

• A fire protection officer (FPO) has been appointed to co-ordinate veld fire management. Because of work constraints the work has been done by the chairman and some committee members.

• A veld fire suppression strategy has been developed and implemented by the FPA membership.

• The area has been subdivided into 5 Groups and equipment allocated to each group.

• Communication is done mainly by means of Radio communication and cell phones and Telkom phones and e-mail.
